Redesigning a college student's apartment

Sometimes I walk into a home to do a Redesign and I think right away "I'm gonna have some fun here"!  That's how I felt in this small, one bedroom apartment.  The client, a college student, went off to class while I redesigned her space.

There's a lot of natural light and great architectural details with high ceilings and moldings in this living room .

Another view of the living room looking back at the entry.  The client has several shelves and storage pieces but was unsure how to best use them.

The Redesign:

I angled the sofa and placed the green shelf  (in the "before" picture above) behind it to hold some plants, taking advantage of the light from the window and to create some visual height.  I placed a tapestry throw over the shelf to add extra color.  The bench that I re-purposed for a coffee table was originally sitting under the window in the dining room.  My client really liked it but wasn't sure what to do with it.  I replaced the braided rug with a more colorful one that I found in another area.

This view shows more fun details this apartment has.  I love the corner closet with the original antique mirror inlay.

I stacked a crate from another room onto an end table to hold some books.  By doing this, it also creates a place to set a drink and adds another area to place a pretty plant by the window.

 Before and after

The table in the dining room is right where my client likes it, next to the window!  She studies here sometimes and loves to have a great view but doesn't love the fact that there isn't a place to store her books and school materials.

I found this unused cabinet in the bedroom to place school books and family photos on.  The braided rug that had been in the living room fits well in here.

Dining room - before and after

Do you have crates, benches or unused furniture hiding in other rooms in your house?  Going shopping in your own home makes you feel like your space is new again and it doesn't cost a thing!  What could be better than that?

Gina, I love how you update a home by shopping all the rooms and making different combinations. The magazines always update things with buying the "right" piece. You show we already may have the right pieces that happen to be in a corner waiting for their debut!

This is so cute! I remember your first apartment being decorated with lots of crates and it was always so homey and comfy looking just like today.
